I get a lot of questions from students about whether or not they should sign up for an SAT or ACT. The truth is that even if they sign up for one, it could be cancelled. Several testing centers have already cancelled for August and September, and I anticipate many more will follow suit. I recommend students focus less on stressing out about the SAT or ACT, and concentrate more on the other aspects of the application process. This year will be unprecedented for many reasons, but students can still standout!

Top Five Things to Consider About College Applications and Testing:

  1. Look for colleges who decided to go test-optional. Check with each college on their policies, especially whether they require test scores for admission and scholarships.
  2. Focus on making your application stronger. Don’t skip what you may feel are irrelevant sections of the application. Fill out every required and optional question.
  3. The essay will be HUGE! Stay away from negative impacts of the current situation, everyone is going through this. Instead, focus on how you have capitalized on the opportunities.
  4. Letters of recommendation will also be incredibly important. Know who to ask and how to help them shape your narrative or what you want colleges to know about you.
  5. Be creative! Extracurricular activities will be scarce. Demonstrate to colleges that you can still make a difference, even if it is in an unconventional way. Are you taking more responsibilities at home? Have you run an organization remotely? Are you making masks? Have you taken a part-time job? Everything matters!
