Many colleges and universities require students to declare a major in their first or second year of school. For some students, this presents challenges. A student may have a major selected, but academically is not approved for the program. Or a guardian chose the major for the student, and the student cannot perform well due to a lack of interest in the major or not academically prepared.

College and university career centers have developed ways to address these student challenges. Most career centers now have exploratory programs in place to help students narrow down a major of choice.

Here are three inventories to take to help get you started.

  1. Self-discovery- Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® offered in career centers.
  2. Transferable skills- Holland Code, connected to the World of Work Map.
  3. Goal setting- the Knowdell Levitz Career Value Card Sort.
