Are you even more undecided on a major than you were before you started school?

Many colleges and universities require students to indicate a major when registering for school. Like most first-year students or even third-year students, you’re feeling overwhelmed. Unable or unwilling to select a major, there are just too many majors to choose only one. “What if you miss out on something?”

Exploratory programs, some called Pathways, have emerged out of Career Development and Academic Advising offices to assist undecided students. This type of program is also beneficial to students not admitted to their first-choice major and either need to improve their academic standing or consider other options. The progress made in an exploratory program is strictly up to the student, and the curriculum is very customizable. Most programs follow a similar structure as outlined here:

  • Self-Discovery
  • Inventory of transferrable Skills
  • Selecting a Major
  • Resume Building
  • Preparing for an Internship
  • Goal-Setting

As undecided students find their place in colleges and universities, regardless of the approach taken to choose a major, it is not for lack of knowledge or passion; its a surplus of interests that leave you unwilling to choose one major. Don’t be afraid to combine career-related strengths into one enormous opportunity. The traditional model of selecting a major no longer works. You may learn that you don’t have one true calling and have multiple careers or follow a very unconventional career path.
