Spring is typically a time when you should have one SAT or ACT under your belt. Juniors should also slim down their list of colleges to between five to seven. College applications begin opening up in July, so students should start to research the application requirements and work toward having them ready by early August or September. Below is a list of essential items students should begin to prepare before the end of May.

  • Get organized – Create of a calendar of important dates and deadlines including admission, financial aid, and scholarship
  • Create a resume of activities – they have participated in since the summer after 8th grade
  • Reach out to teachers – in their junior year to ask for a letter of recommendation
  • Create a letter-of-recommendation packet – to share with recommenders before summer begins
  • Develop a theme – for your application materials – what is it that you want your application to convey about you as a person, student, and potential community member
  • Practice for the SAT or ACT – Should attempt one or the other at least three times with good practice
  • Work on a draft – Some applications have already developed essay topics for the next round of applications; students should have a rough draft by the end of May
  • Take a tour, a virtual tour – Many colleges have options to tour campus virtually through sites like YouVisit
  • Plan – If you know your major, check your academic selections for senior year and make sure they make sense
